FIM rules in brief
Waypoints and radii, DZ-FZ speed zones, neutralisations, unlocks, maximum time and race STOP under the FIM W2RC 2027 regulations, as RoadBookAI uses them.
RoadBookAI takes the FIM W2RC 2027 rules (the rally raid world championship) as its reference: the waypoint table (Art. 11.2), safety waypoints on dangers (Art. 11.4), unlocks (Art. 11.5), speed zones (Art. 16), neutralisations and liaisons (Art. 15), passage controls (Art. 22), the starting order (Art. 17), maximum time and abandons (Art. 17.8, 21) and the fixed penalty FP (Art. 24). This is a practical summary: for each event the organiser's choices also apply, and the organiser may redefine radii and penalties in the supplementary regulations or on the first page of each day's roadbook. In the Studio these values are the FIM W2RC 2027 profile, the default for race stages.
Two radii for every waypoint
- Opening radius: on entering this circle, the rider's instrument shows the direction and distance of the waypoint. Some waypoints have no guidance.
- Validation radius: the passage is valid only within this circle. Missing the waypoint costs the stated penalty.
Some waypoints open only after the previous one has been validated, or within 1000 m if the previous one was missed.
The types
| Type | Name | Opening | Validation | Penalty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WPV | visible | always | 200 m | 15 min |
| WPE | eclipse | 1000 m, after the previous one | 90 m | 15 min |
| WPM | masked | 800 m | 90 m | 15 min |
| WPS | safety | 1000 m | 30 m | 15 min |
| WPC | control | no guidance | 300 m | 15 min |
| WPP | precise | 100 m, no guidance | 20 m | 2 min |
| WPN | navigation | 800 m | 200 m | 60 min |
| CP | passage control | 1000 m, after the previous one | 90 m | 120 min |
| DSS | start of selective section | 1000 m, after the previous one | 200 m | stage |
| ASS | finish of selective section | 800 m | 90 m | stage |
| DZ | start of speed zone | 1000 m, after the previous one | 90 m | 15 min |
| FZ | end of speed zone | 1000 m, after the previous one | 90 m | 15 min |
| DN / FN | start / end of neutralisation | 1000 m, after the previous one | 90 m | stage |
| DT / FT | start / end of liaison | 1000 m, after the previous one | 90 m | stage |
The colours are the ones the Studio uses for each type, the same on the map, in the RoadBook and in the inspector. "Stage" means that the penalty is decided by the organiser in the event regulations.
Speed zones (DZ–FZ)
Between a DZ and its FZ there is a speed limit, stated on the DZ (in the Studio, the waypoint's Speed field).
- The rider's instrument must sound the alarm 5 km/h below the limit.
- There is a 90 m tolerance after the DZ and before the FZ.
- Speeding is counted in pulses, one for every 150 m or 10 seconds over the limit; each pulse is worth according to the excess at that moment: 10 s from 1 to 5 km/h, 1 minute from 6 to 15, 2 minutes from 16 to 40, 6 minutes over 40.
- Classes can have a category speed (for example 160 or 130 km/h): from the second pulse, 1 minute per pulse. In liaisons the limit applies over the whole section.
- In the PDF and in the RoadBook the zone is framed between DZ and FZ.
Neutralisations and liaisons
Between DN and FN time is neutralised for the scheduled duration, written in the roadbook. The rider enters the exit area (the FN radius) only in the last minute and sets off again at zero. An early exit costs 1, 2 and then 5 minutes, counted over the whole event. Between DT and FT you are on a liaison, with the time imposed from the DT: lateness and early arrival are treated as in a neutralisation. These waypoints can also have a speed.
Waypoints you cannot find: unlocks
The regulations do not provide for the free opening of a waypoint: a rider who cannot find it asks race control for an unlock code: the WPM code makes WPMs and WPSs visible (3 hours of penalty for the first three uses in the event, 6 hours from the fourth), or the rider uses the emergency code (6 hours). In other races the organiser can allow forced opening with a single or double penalty. See Stage rules.
Maximum time, retirements and abandons
Riders who exceed the maximum time get the maximum time plus the fixed penalty FP, whose value is given by the event's supplementary regulations (in hours); a rider who has retired gets the maximum time plus 3 hours and the stage penalty, one who did not start plus 6 hours and the stage penalty, plus the value of the waypoints not validated. Riders who validate fewer than 70 % of the waypoints of the selective section have abandoned: they are classified as retired. A missed CP costs 120 minutes.
Starts and starting order
At the start, an early start costs 1 minute; staying stopped on the line for more than 30 seconds after the signal costs 2 minutes; lateness at the start control costs 1 minute per minute, and beyond 30 minutes (60 if the supplementary regulations say so) the start is refused. The starting order follows Art. 17: the first ten every 3 minutes, the next ten every 2, then one a minute; at the prologue by category, at the first stage list N from the prologue, then the previous day's results. The Studio has a generator for it (see Entrants, start times and unlocking).
The RoadBook in the race
Under the regulations the RoadBook is moved forward by hand: with the FIM W2RC 2027 profile the app has no automatic scrolling, shows no coordinates or remaining km, and locks the settings that the regulations decide (see regulation mode). The day's PDF opens with the table of radii and penalties and the list of waypoints.
LateNote, the check on the RoadBook falling behind, is not in the FIM regulations: when an organiser penalises it, it is a rule of their supplementary regulations.
STOP and race STOP
The roadbook has two different signs:
- STOP (red octagon): the road sign. It is for information only: it tells the rider there is a STOP, but it does not oblige anything and it is not checked.
- Race STOP (red disc with a stopwatch): a compulsory stop for a number of seconds written in the note (for example "STOP 3s"; 3 seconds if not given). The official race calculation checks it with the GPS: the rider must stay below 2 km/h inside the STOP radius (30 m by default) for at least that long, otherwise they get the penalty set in the stage rules (3 minutes by default). Radius, stop and penalty can be changed for each stage.
In the Studio a race STOP is added from the note inspector (Race STOP and the seconds) or from the palette of the drawing editor. Older roadbooks have no race STOPs. In RN2 the icon travels as a custom icon; the apps receive the race STOPs with their duration in the stage package.
Dangers
The roadbook marks three levels of danger with one, two or three red exclamation marks. In the PDF, the km of the dangerous note is underlined and the page footer shows "Next" and "Danger". The rules require a safety waypoint (WPS) on level 3 dangers (Art. 11.4): in the Studio, a danger 3 without a waypoint produces a warning in the inspector.
Training profile
For training, RoadBookAI offers the Training profile: the same types, validation radii 50 % wider and no penalties; the race rules (speed bands, race STOP, early exit, 70 % threshold, unlocks) are off and the organiser or the tutor switches them on one by one. See FIM waypoints and radii and Organiser profiles.
